The site of Cetamura is located on the property of Badia a Coltibuono, in the heart of the Chianti region, ca. 35 Km northeast of Siena. Cetamura del Chianti is a site that has now demonstrated an extended chronological arc from the Etruscan Archaic and Hellenistic periods through the early Roman Empire, and with several significant medieval episodes. Of particular interest are the Hellenistic artisan's quarter, with a kiln for making brick and tile of the third-second centuries B.C., and a Roman villa rustica of the first-second centuries of this era.
The medieval phases supported a component referred to as a castrum in monastic documents of the nearby Badia a Coltibuono.
